Released through 502 Recordings, homebase of the excellent DJ Oneman, this collaboration between Desto, Clouds & Jimi Tenor is tenaciously caught inbetween the dancefloor and the chillout room. The familiar jazz flute sounds that have traversed sampledelic music for 20 years now appear, but juxtaposed against fat synthetic bass lurching along an ominous beat. The video takes the song’s name quite literally, showing dancing “birds” (or women, as some us call them) of the silent era moving in synch with the modern sounds.

Brownswood Recordings and The Steve Reid Foundation celebrate the life and spirit of one of the world’s greatest jazz drummers – Steve Reid – via a deluxe 12” (180g vinyl, beautifully artworked sleeve and liner notes) featuring a brand new interpretation of the classic ‘Lions Of Judah’ by emanative & Ahmed Abdullah backed with a Four Tet re-edit.
The Steve Reid Foundation was established by Gilles Peterson in memory of his friend. The aims of the foundation are to fundraise on behalf of struggling musicians in need of help and support. All profits from the sale of the ‘Lions Of Judah’ 12” will go to the foundation.
Gifted drummer and producer Nick Woodmansey records deep, space jazz under the moniker emanative. Ahmed Abdullah is the trumpeter who played alongside Steve in The Legendary Master Brotherhood as well as being a veteran of the Sun Ra Arkestra. He was the composer of ‘Lions Of Judah’ and it was by happy coincidence (or was it fate?) that Ahmed was able to contribute to this new version, jumping into the studio to record in the midst of his family vacation in London. Ahmed had been visiting London every year since he met his wife at Ronnie Scott’s whilst performing with The Sun Ra Arkestra some twenty years ago, and he’d always brought his horn hoping to get a chance to play, but for some reason or other it had never quite happened… until now.

One of the key spiritual jazz LPs in the canon of South African jazz will be reissued by Matsuli Music later this year. Initially I was unable to locate the master tapes and the recording was restored from a clean vinyl pressing. But the master tapes have now been located and I will be travelling to South African later this month to collect them and to speak to remaining members of the group. Tracks from the 1974 debut have appeared previously on the Comet Records compilation Ouelele as well as on the Strut Records compilation Next Stop Soweto. I have previously written about them here.
The recording will be available as a limited edition 180g vinyl release as well as MP3 and FLAC digital editions. If the research goes well then I expect that the release will be available for purchase from 1 November 2011.
